As the popular saying goes, Safe is better than Sorry. In other words, one must take precautionary action to avoid a disaster, rather than worrying after it takes place.
Lightning is one such natural phenomenon that cannot be prevented. Hence, lightning protection is of immense importance in every single industry and facility since it ensures the protection of irreplaceable human life, valuable property as well as the environment around them.
With the aim of spreading awareness and equipping budding young engineers with knowledge on in this regard, the IEEE IAS SBC of University of Moratuwa organized a Guest Lecture on Industrial Aspects of Lightning Protection Systems. The session was held on 28th November 2019 at the University premises, marking the 3rd milestone in the Lecture Series the SBC has in store for this year.
The lecture was conducted by an experienced professional in the field of Electrical Installations, Eng. Laksith Uchitha Sirisena, Engineering Manager at Amithi Power Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. The session covered several important topics such as Methods of lightning protection, Analysis of strikes, Risk Assessment and Standards, all which a vital for a proper understanding of protection against lightning.
